Nikki Armstrong started working at WFDU in 2007, with her show Blues in the Grooves, a diverse selection of Blues featuring local, regional and national Blues, Funk, Soul and R&B artists with a special focus on female performers.
Emerging from an early background as a model, dancer and actress, Nikki has established herself in the Metro area as a sought after vocal and performer, with several bands including Whole Lotta Blues (Blues) and The Nikki Armstrong Project (Jazz). She is inspired by the great jazz singers, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee as well as the great Soul and R&B artists, James Brown and Tina Turner. Nikki has studied music and voice in Boston, LA and New York, most notably with the great arranger Hal Schaefer (Peggy Lee, Marilyn Monroe).
Outside of the station, Nikki is an important voice in the New York area Blues and Jazz scene, having been on the board of directors of the New York Blues & Jazz Society for over 8 years as Musician’s Liaison; coordinating, producing, and performing in successful Blues and Jazz events for venues such as Birdland in NYC, Sirius Radio as well as benefits for NOLA.
