John Heffernan started at WFDU in the late 80s, beginning with news and eventually hosting Music Palace, part of the Music America format. John’s show is mostly bluegrass with related music mixed in, like Old Timey, String Band, Old Time Country, and so on. John is known for presenting about 40% new releases and 60% more established bands, giving listeners the full bluegrass spectrum. The beginning of John’s show is typically bluegrass gospel and the news is delivered by Dick Naumann at 8, 8:30, and 9am.
John was born in 1948 and spent most of his years in New Jersey, having lived about 1 ½ miles from the station in Bergenfield for about 30 years. He first came in contact with bluegrass and country over 40 years ago spending a summer volunteering in the mountains of Kentucky. He was the past President of the Hurdy Gurdy Folk Music Club and Bergen County Historical Society, where he is still an active member.
When it comes to radio, John wants to present as much music as time allows. He likes all genres except rap and techno. Essentially, anything that has real melody. Other hobbies include reading, walking, hiking, swimming, handball, music performances, drama, and comedy.
